Isn’t it strange how easily you can end up in a life you don’t recognize, confused at how this happened in the first place? You sometimes wonder where you went wrong, but there doesn’t seem to be a way out.

Many of us work our lives away at jobs we hate because at some point we accepted the status quo and lost hope of the lives we once imagined and sought.

We are supposed to believe that following society’s rules without question is the adult thing to do. Unfortunately, many college graduates are paying a hefty price for the mindset of obedience. If you are one of them, I know how frustrated you must feel. You lived by the following rules without question, and the results weren’t quite what they were cracked up to be.

Here are the three rules that need to go to the wayside:

1. You must go to college unless you want to flip burgers for the rest of your life. College is hailed as the path to success and you were told to go immediately after high school, whether you know what you want to do or not. Well, it’s glaringly obvious this didn’t really pan out for a lot of people. Just ask one of the many college graduates who is in debt up to her eyeballs and working in the kitchen next to a guy without even a high school diploma.

2. The job everyone should strive for is a 9-5 corporate gig. If you are among the ‘fortunate’ college graduates who have the right connections, you will finally get what you have worked so hard for. Unfortunately for many, that excitement will quickly fizzle as the reality sets in that not everyone is cut out for this life. Your choice is stay where you are, stagnant and resigned, or move in a direction that is supposed to be forward and upward, trudging your way up the corporate ladder, but for what?

3. Constant boredom and dissatisfaction should be accepted. You are told that feeling bad is normal. The quest for adventure, joy, and personal fulfillment is dismissed as idealistic or even childish. Never mind the headaches, anxiety, back pain, and any other mental and physical ailments that start to manifest as a result of forcing your body and mind to adapt to an environment that doesn’t inspire and elevate you.

It’s all too easy to accept this paradigm and get sucked into the daily grind. Of course you want to earn a living, but don’t forget that the whole point is to live. We recognize that time is money, but somehow we don’t notice that money is time, and time is really life! With every moment in that job you hate, life is spent.

If you know this isn’t what you want, then start figuring out what is. Some people will think you have lost it when you decide to leave a stable job for an entrepreneurial venture or an opportunity with less ‘status’ or ‘prestige,’ but the truth is, you don’t have to pick from a set of pre-packaged careers. The possibilities for your future are infinite and you are the ultimate authority. You don’t have to follow their rules!
